Consumers eagerly await final details about the appliance economic stimulus plan

I have noticed a surge if searches for the keywords “appliance economic stimulus” which tells me people want to know more details about the plan and how it will work, especially on how to apply for the appliance rebate. Here’s what I know from reading numerous news article about the “Cash for Appliances” program.

Here’s what I know: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is getting ready to dole out $300 million in economic stimulus money to the states as parts of a plan to get consumers to buy new, energy- efficient, Energy Star appliances.

The program, scheduled to launch sometime in late November, will be administered by each state and the rules governing what appliances qualify, what the rebate amounts will be, and who will keep track of the program must be finalized by the states by October 15.

Right now the program is vague as no national standard exists and each state will run its own cash for appliances program. In fact, most states are seeking input from their constituents. To give your input, contact your state representative or visit your state’s website.

However, according to an article from the Wall Street Journal, “Rebates will be available only for products with the government’s Energy Star label, a symbol that the appliance meets energy efficiency guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency and the DOE.”

The DOE is making recommendations to the states on what appliances should qualify and recommends in room air conditioners, clothes washers, dishwashers, freezers, and refrigerators because these appliances offer the greatest energy-saving potential.

Unlike the Cash for Clunkers program, consumers will not have to turn in their old appliances in order to receive the rebate. In fact, thanks to the many programs offered by utility and state agencies across the country, consumers can get even more money by recycling their old appliances.

If you are a California resident, visit the Flex Your Power Website and enter your zip code to find appliance rebates in your area. The Flex Your Power Website is run by a partnership between utilities, residents, businesses, and other nonprofit agencies, all working to save energy.

If you are a New Jersey resident, get a cash rebate of $30 for your working Refrigerators and Freezers in addition to free pick up and recycling. To schedule the pickup of a refrigerator or freezer for recycling, New Jersey residents can call (877) 270-3520 or visit www.NJCleanEnergy.com.

Check with your town or city’s recycling program or sanitation service to see if you can get any cash back for your old, working appliance. According to an article from USAToday.com, more than 60 utilities across the nation offer some sort of refrigerator/freezer recycling program.

Save some green on a new energy-efficient appliance on Earth Day

Pay zero sales tax on the purchase of new Energy Star appliances, get rebates for recycling, save money off your utility bills and have your old bulky items hauled away for free.

Earth Day is Wednesday and in celebration many states are helping consumers to go green and to save some green —money that is.

If you live in Missouri, you will not have to pay the 4.225 percent state sales tax on the purchase of Energy Star-qualified appliances during the “Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday” going on today through Saturday, April 25.

For Michigan residents, you can receive 10 percent off the cost (up to $75) of a new washer and dryer, dishwasher and refrigerator through 2011.

To see what rebates programs are available for your state or city, visit the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency, www.dsireusa.org. The database also includes local utility companies, as many of them are offering rebates as well for the purchase of qualified energy appliances.

Not only will all these programs save you money off the purchase of your new appliance, but your new energy-efficient appliance will save you money each and every year by lowering your utility bills. For example, replacing a refrigerator built before 1990 will shave $200 off your yearly electric bill.

After buying your new appliance, be sure to help the Earth out by recycling your old appliance. In some cases you can do this for free or actually earn money off your old appliance. Check with your utility company if they offer any energy rebates or recycling programs. Some companies will offer you money in the form of a “rebate” which you can use against future energy bills, sort of like a gift certificate.

For example, if you are a Nebraska resident you can get a $35 rebate check for recycling old, energy-wasting refrigerators and freezers.  The Nebraska Public Power District’s refrigerator recycling program includes free pickup of refrigerators and freezers, and a  $35 rebate check for you. Electric customers of any participating utility can take advantage of the program by calling 866-444-9160 or visiting www.appliancerecycling.com to schedule a free pickup.

If you live in Winter Haven, Florida, you can recycle your old appliances for free on Wednesday. Residents can have bulk items removed from the curb which they would otherwise be charged for. Items included in the service include:  mattresses, appliances like refrigerators, dryers, water heaters, TVs and other electronic items.

There are tons of other program similar to these out there. Be sure to look for such programs around where you live as the Earth Day holiday is helping more people than ever save the planet and save some money.

Fort Collins Utilities are offering lots of incentives to get people to switch to energy-efficient appliances.

Here’s a story about all the appliance-related programs available to folks in Fort Collins, Colorado.
